COUNSELLING

Prusik therapist, Monique Smith, specializes in child, youth, and young adult counselling (age 5-25), tackling many issues from anxiety, depression, anger, self-harm, suicide intervention, family tension, grief and loss, addictions, eating disorders, OCD behaviours, identity, trauma, and sports performance. Monique is known for her creative counselling style and passion for teaching mental health skills. Monique provides her clients with tools to help with emotion regulation and healthy decision-making. Monique draws on systemic, CBT, DBT, narrative and solution-focused model of therapy that best meets the need of the child, youth, or young adult client. Monique offers optional faith-based counselling services. 

MENTORSHIP

Sometimes clients need an alternative approach to therapy, or need help working towards specific life goals. Monique provides sports performance coaching and general life coaching to help a client reach a specific goal. When deemed appropriate, Monique utilizes a variety of activities to engage the client. Some examples include photography, art, music, sport and play. Monique has supported many amateur athletes in their sports journey.

SPEAKING

There are many challenges students face as they navigate the world. Together, Olympic gold and bronze medalist and mental health therapist, Monique Smith tackle this concern in their virtual presentation, “How to Build a S.T.R.O.N.G.er Brain: A Gameplan for Healthy Decision-Making.”  Incorporating storytelling, teaching, wrestling, and multi-media, Carol and Monique bring audience members on an engaging tour of the mind, teaching HOW decisions are made as well as giving practical SKILLS for healthy decision-making. 

PRUSIK: BEHIND THE NAME

In climbing, the PRUSIK KNOT is used in emergencies as a safety knot and to help in the process of ascending and descending a rope. COUNSELLING is a “safety knot” to help clients navigate life’s challenging situations.

Monique started PRUSIK YOUTH COUNSELLING & MENTORSHIP SERVICE in 2010. Over the years she has worked with a diverse population of clients, including early childhood intervention, at-risk youth, athletes, young professionals, parents and families. Her work has taken her to remote fly-in communities in Nunavut, Nunavik, and the Northwest Territories. Monique lives an adventurous lifestyle, from paragliding, to freestyle wrestling, to major home renovations and so much more…
